A pleasant surprise is revealed on entering this apparently unassuming courtyard pub. Its well-proportioned lounge and dining areas are dominated by substantial old timbers of the 16th century stables that once formed part of the hotel fronting the square during that period. Separate booths, now with tables, disclose its original purpose. Old and new blend well with a cosy lounge bar in one corner and a public bar (via steps) around another corner in a later addition to the building. A varied menu with plenty of choice from light lunchtime snacks to substantial evening meals are available using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. As weekends are usually busy it is advisable to book in advance, especially Sunday Lunch. Both staff and regulars are friendly and make this venue well worth seeking out.
