In the days when the Castle was a part of the large local estate of the Shrewsbury & Wem Brewery, beer miles were minimal as the brewery was just across the back yard! It is now owned by Joule's Brewery of Market Drayton who always had plans to have the Grade II Listed building better reflect its 400 year history. The results of their major renovation project were clear for all to see when it re-opened in March 2012, and it is readily apparent that a tremendous amount of money, imagination and affection have been bestowed upon the building. It’s quite large, having a bar, small snug, lounge, dining area and a small meetings room. This incidentally is available to local organizations free of charge. Dogs are allowed in the public bar. All in all it has the air of what it used to be, which was a traditional coaching house. There is plenty of exposed woodwork to the wall and ceilings, wood panelling on some walls, the floorings are either boarded or tiled, and the wood-burning stoves provide a certain cosiness. In addition, there are features which may be of interest. The front of the bar in the lounge is built from old floor boards, and finding the dartboard in the public bar may prove to be a challenge! But it is there. Also there seems to be a growing collection of local historical photographs enlivening the corridors. In summary, a sympathetic restoration which we hope will come to be appreciated and much used by the locals. Regular 'Quiz & Chips' evenings.
