This iconic gem of a Grade II Listed town centre pub was sold by Marston’s in early 2015, and reopened under new ownership in October 2015 after having undergone a major refurbishment. It’s been a very sympathetic restoration project, indeed to such an extent that it is not immediately apparent to a casual observer that much has happened! Occupying a long, narrow, medieval burgage site, there are three inter-connected rooms, one of which has a log burning stove as its centrepiece. Its attraction is enhanced by it being sited in the large original inglenook fireplace that was exposed by the renovation work. Low ceilings with exposed timber beams, plenty of old pictures and memorabilia on the walls, a collection of miscellaneous bar furniture and tiled and boarded floors give the whole place a traditional, comfortable and welcoming feel. The Navy Room to the rear of the pub is another room and can be used for meetings, for example by the Naval Association! So, all in all, this is a welcome return for a much loved and cherished hostelry. Regular live music. Happy hour prices on pints only 12-6 Mon-Fri. Covered area with an outside bar at the rear of the pub.
