The image here has moved rapidly since its days as the rather faded Cross Gates owned by Enterprise Inns. It was taken into private ownership in 2011, refurbished and reopened as Ye Olde Cross Gates Inn, when it became a traditional food led pub. Nevertheless, with its separate public bar, there was still provision for drinkers. In July 2014 it became the Smoke Stop, and was billed as the "first American Smokehouse in Shropshire" and is unashamedly an attempt to create an American style diner/restaurant. The former public bar, with its own entrance, has now been incorporated into dining space, and the whole of the interior has been opened out into various areas for eating. The house beer, Smoke Stop Ale, comes from Molson Coors. Over time, it has been in the ownership of a brace of local breweries, the Wrekin Brewery of Wellington, and later the Shrewsbury & Wem Brewery. It also appeared in the Good Beer Guide on nine occasions in the 70's and 80's! Change of ownership in summer 2016 but the format has been remained.
