The former Westminster Bank building, which closed in 1995, was first converted into a pub by Marston’s as Rothwells. Over years, further changes followed and in Spring 2017, it reopened as the Hooded Ram and Gali Kitchen by The Hooded Ram Brewing Company based in the Isle of Man. The concept is a fusion of a traditional pub and a cafe serving traditional Indian Punjabi style street food. (Gali = Street, alley, or narrow lane; Punjabi). On the right of the entrance there are bench seating bays whilst to the left is the eating area furnished in a traditional Indian style. Nine beers are served including a selection from the parent company but be aware that the 11.3% Abattoir Blues is only served in half pints at £7.00 per glass. Unusually for the area, there is full sized shuffleboard installed. Ask at the bar for pucks. Note that the main toilets are downstairs. On the wall outside, a Blue Plaque commemorates the First Experimental System of Traffic Lights in England which were installed opposite the pub in the centre of Princes Square in 1927 before their permanent installation in 1928.
